Cuban Election Finds Unhappy Ending

Popular Regime Shattered... Back at Beginning

By LESTER EICHEL
Central Press Staff Writer

NEW YORK.-The Cuban election was not the happy solution it was pretended to be. It, in fact, aroused additional anti-American sentiment in Cuba.

Miguel M. Gomez won. He is a sugar planter and former associate of Gerardo Machado, who as president was driven from the country. But Gomez won merely because virtually all the liberal elements were suppressed.

It was made illegal for Dr. Grau San Martin to run. Yet he is the man the majority of Cubans evidently have desired. His regime as president, liberal and popular with the people, had to give way when the United States government-or its ambassador-turned against him.

Cuba remains under a military dictatorship. Dr. Grau San Martin had "freed" labor. Today it is back where it was. Not only have the liberal political parties been outlawed, but labor unions have been dissolved and their national president, Cesar Vilar, was imprisoned.

Jefferson Caffery, U. S. ambassador, is being attacked as sharing a large part of the blame-together with American sugar, banking and utility interests.

Much that is being brought out in the U. S. senate munitions' investigation: John Kenneth Turner's "Shall It Be Again?", published in the early twenties; Frank H. Simonds' "History of the World War"; the recent "The Road to War" by Walter Millis, and Walter Hines Page's letters, assembled by Burton J. Hendrick.

The private Morgan correspondence is, however, new and of inestimable value-as is some newly revealed correspondence of President Wilson and Secretary of State Lansing.

WHOSE MONEY?

If the federal government is forced to return processing taxes to processors, whose money is it?

That is a fine point. Haven't the processors already passed on the taxes to the public? Will the companies gain double-and the public lose altogether?

Marketing Company Cleared of Blame

The Growers Marketing company of Los Angeles was cleared of blame in the damage suit brought against that company and Robert Y. Kim by 22 growers of Imperial Valley, according to a decision received Wednesday from C. J. Carey, chairman of the division of market enforcement.

Carey's decision set forth that the marketing company had not purchased produce from the growers but had: purchased the products from Kim. Kim, the evidence showed, had not been the agent of the company, but had handled the products upon his own responsibility.

Event Details

The Cuban election resulted in Miguel M. Gomez's victory as a sugar planter and former associate of Gerardo Machado, but only because liberal elements were suppressed. Dr. Grau San Martin, desired by most Cubans, was barred from running; his liberal regime ended due to opposition from the U.S. government or ambassador. Cuba remains under military dictatorship; labor freedoms reversed, unions dissolved, and leader imprisoned. Anti-American sentiment increased, blaming U.S. ambassador Jefferson Caffery and American interests.
