The Overland Monthly for November has an unusually varied table of contents, abounding in practical and instructive reading matter. It opens with the second installment of Capt. Scammon's "Pacific Coast Tides," an interesting bird's-eye view of the coast from Ensenada to Guaymas, in Mexico. Other practical western subjects we find treated under the titles of "Oregon Indians," "Skilful Farming in Los Angeles," a most timely paper; "A Few Facts about Japan;" and "The Willamette Summer."
The tastes of those not so practically inclined, who crave western fiction, will be well satisfied by "The Lost Treasure of Montezuma," Ross Burr's "Jo," by Prentice Mulford, "Glimpses of Picture Dreams," "Mexican and the American Indian," "Sage Brush Bill," "The Three," and "Summer with a Colt."
Most of these articles are based upon facts and thereby gain additional interest. We also find a few concisely written and thoughtful pages upon "Excessive Government," by Henry Robinson, and a very good paper from the pen of N. P. Dolg, entitled "Westminster Hall and Eloquence."
