Full Text

Sept. 20. Rents in the environs of the city now, in many instances, command as high a rent as the best houses in the town. A small tenement of four or five rooms, has let, within 3 miles of the city, at the rate of upwards of 100l. per ann.

Half of the citizens of Philadelphia have become inhabitants of the country; as for the Federal Government it is neither here nor there. Most public offices are shut.

The thinness in the population of the city will have a tendency to accelerate the return of salubrity. The scarcity of our markets is felt, owing to that circumstance.

The humanity of those men who have voluntarily stepped forth to relieve the poor in this time of general distress, can never be forgotten; their conduct is beyond the reach of encomium.

No circumstance has added more distress to the present calamity, than the disagreement of the physicians about the disease. They at first differed as to the mode of cure; but now it appears they do not agree in determining what is and what is not the yellow fever.

We are informed that neither of the sitting managers, physicians, nurses, or attendants, at the Hospital at Bush Hill, have taken the infection, or are any ways indisposed, and that there are near twenty patients recovered at that place.
