Extract of a letter from Albany, May 25.
We have just received the following intelligence: That a small post of militia, under the command of General Heard, at Paramus, was lately intended to be attacked by three hundred of the Tory levies; but being timely informed of their design, he changed his ground. The enemy, returning to their former quarters by different routes, mistook each other for their enemy, and commenced firing, wherein ten of their men were killed. In their retreat, our men killed two more; several were wounded, which they carried off. They killed one man of ours, and took another prisoner.
They had deluded a number of other poor wretches, who were taken with them and are now in confinement, to go with them to New-York; offering them, that when they had served themselves there, they would be suffered immediately to return to their farms; that in a fortnight Gen. Howe and army would penetrate into Ulster County, and reward their loyalty, by giving them possession of their Whig-neighbors farms.
