It is said arrangements have been made to bring the intelligence of a choice, when it is effected, from Washington to this city, by a series of expresses, and that the Mail Contractor at Paulus' Hook, opposite New-York, has engaged, if the express arrives there in the night, to announce the tidings to the waking citizens, by the discharge of one 18-pounder should the choice have fallen on Jackson; of two, in case Adams is successful, and three if Crawford should obtain the vote. With this information, when announced, the express will hurry on for Boston. The engagement, we understand, is to bring the news to this city from Washington in 56 hours.
The act of opening, and recording the Electoral Votes, on Wednesday, probably occupied the two Houses not over an hour; and the first balloting in the House probably not more than another hour; so that the news of the result of that ballot might be known at three o'clock on Wednesday last. If definitive, the express would start forthwith, and the result may arrive in the course of this (Friday) night; when we shall stop the press to announce it. This is, however, hardly to be expected, as the roads are.
