LAS VEGAS, Nev., Oct. 22 (INS)--A tiny but powerful atomic explosion ripped the bleak Nevada desert near Las Vegas today and opened history's first atomic war games.
The seventh atomic explosion within the Continental United States gave every indication of being the long-heralded "baby atom bomb."
Observers in Las Vegas and as close as 30 miles from the detonation neither saw nor heard the explosion. Atomic energy Commission officials told surprised newsmen:
"You didn't hear it because it apparently was too small, and we're too far away."
Informed sources had said repeatedly that the atomic weapons to be used in history's first atomic combat maneuvers were small and aimed at tactical support of ground troops.
Some observers within 30 miles reported "a faint rumbling" but admitted it might have been TNT set off before the atomic detonation to calibrate delicate measuring instruments.
