Full Text

The idle Report that our Fleet and Forces returned so unexpected from their intended Expedition, in Consequence of an Express sent to recall them, pursuant to a secret Article in the late ignoble convention; gained so much Credit, that at the grand Seminary of Corruption, a Person offered to lay an hundred Guineas on it, and none of the Company would take the bet.

But we can assure the Publick, that the Express sent to Sir Edward Hawke contained a fresh Account received from abroad of the defenceless State of Rochefort and Rochell. This account was likewise transmitted to the Lt. General who commanded the land forces, in order to inspire him with that Confidence, which the Prospect of certain Success will give, even to a Coward, much more to one that bears so high a Command.
