NEW SOUTH WALES.

A fortunate discovery has been made in New South Wales. A river, called the Macquarrie, of the first magnitude, has been found in the interior, running through a most beautiful country, rich in soil, limestone, slate, and good timber.

A means of communication like this has long been anxiously searched for without success, and many began to entertain an apprehension that the progress of colonization in New Holland would be confined to its coasts.

The Surveyor General speaks of it in the highest terms, and when he quitted its course it was northerly; he was then in 32 45 south latitude, and 148 58 east longitude. He had pursued the course of another river, called the Lachlan, which terminates among unhealthy marshes—but it is 1200 miles in its winding length, passing through a low, unpleasant country.
