FOR THE ALEXANDRIA ADVERTISER.
To Richard Brent, Esq.
SIR,
YOU have announced yourself a candidate for this Senatorial District, at the ensuing election--and as I am a voter in the district, and have always respected your talents and principles; but regretted you did not exercise them more freely--Yet I feel every disposition to promote your election. provided you will answer me the following queries in the affirmative; and believe me, when I assure you, my reasons for putting the questions in this public manner is that a number of my neighboring freeholders wish the same information-before they make up their minds how they shall vote.
Are you in favor of the election of James Madison to the next presidency?
And will you do all you can to promote his election?
Why it becomes important that the freeholders should be possessed of this information is that you, (if elected) may in the case of the death, resignation, or in the case of the death, resignation or inability of an elector to attend, have a vote in the election of an elector, to fill such a vacancy--As I am told, the act of Assembly provides that the legislature, by a joint ballot of both branches fill vacancies.
Administration of Thomas Jefferson I am of opinion that should James Madison be his successor, a similar course will be pursued--Further, I have an objection to trusting a dotard, or any person just returned from amidst the intrigues of a foreign court, with such an important post. Your goodness will excuse the rough style of a Farmer, unused to writing about political matters; and attribute the attempt to a laudable zeal to obtain what he deems important information.
