Support for A Seaport
WITH A 19-0 FINAL VOTE, the State Senate voted
to empower the Governor to seek establishment
of foreign trade zones at the Anchorage and Fairbanks
International Airports.
This is fine, but the amendment to include Juneau
and Nome, and Annette, which was dropped, should be
reconsidered before final action is taken.
Seaports as well as airports must be included in
such action.
With Canadian commerce increasing in
the south of the State as well as Japanese interests,
and Nome's proximity to another foreign nation, this
qualifies them as much as the centers of air activity.
Nome is the harborage through which thousands of
tons of trading goods to Siberia has passed, and if
this is to be encouraged, there must be a port on the
northern coast designated for that purpose.
A 19 to 0 vote indicates that not even our own
Senators were interested in seeing this seaport made
a trading port.
