170
Mr. Polk has 170 electoral votes more than sufficient to elect him, and a majority of 65 over Mr. Clay. And yet, had Polk lost New York, the 36 votes of which State he has obtained by the vote of a large minority of her citizens, he would have been defeated!
POPULAR VOTE.
The following table embraces all the States—some of the counties estimated.
800,323
818,549
58,285
Should the votes of the States in which the majorities are conjectured, not vary very widely from our estimates, Mr. Polk's plurality over Mr. Clay will be, (including South Carolina.) 41,197. The Abolition vote will be about 58,000—showing that Mr. Polk will go in as a plurality and not as a majority President.
It is sometimes said that Mr. Clay carried Ohio by the Abolition vote. Mark how a plain tale shall put down this falsehood. At the Governor's election in October, it stood thus:
Bartley (W.) 147,728
Todd (Loco) 146,461
King (Abolition.) 8,411
And in November thus:
Clay. 155,113
Polk. 149,058
Birney 8,050
It will be seen that the Abolitionists, almost to a man, adhered to Birney.
