Full Text
The Board of Health of Connecticut, for instance, report that the malaria wave is gradually extending over the State. It follows the coast line, runs up the valleys through which the rivers pour, and spreads from right to left. Malaria is also more frequent than formerly in the hill country of Massachusetts, in Berkshire County, for instance; and its evil effects are felt in the oldest communities.
The manufacturing towns suffer from it, and even in resorts which have been selected as health resorts, malaria begins to show itself.
Throughout the neighborhood of New York it spreads its baneful influences and retards the settlement of districts adjacent to the city. For many years fears of malaria have frightened people away from the banks of the Hudson, and the value of landed property has consequently been much depressed. Westchester county has been a great sufferer by reason of the bad reputation it has acquired as a seat of the malaria poison. Staten Island has become a suspected region on that on the same account, and elegant houses have been unable to find purchasers, unless at very small prices.
