Mr. Clay's Prospect.

The Washington correspondent of the Cincinnati Enquirer, writing under date of the 3d ult., says:

Though the late letter of Mr. Clay seemed to settle the question, who would be the nominee of the whig convention, yet I must say that the matter is very doubtful. The most determined and untiring exertions are being made by the Taylor and McLean men to defeat his nomination. They are firmly bent on his defeat, and I shall not be astonished if they succeed in having Mr. Clay set aside. The Taylor men particularly, are desperate in their determination to defeat Clay. I have heard some of them go so far as to say that if Mr. Clay be nominated, and Mr. Polk be his opponent, they would prefer Mr. Polk's election to Mr. Clay's. You can form some idea from this, of the feeling existing in that division of the whig party.

A strong effort will be made to nominate Mr. Crittenden, of Kentucky, for President. The disappointed factions will rally on him, if by so doing they can defeat Mr. Clay. I wish this suggestion of one of the present under currents of the whig stream recollected;—there is more in it than whigs generally dream of.
