A Letter Which Seemingly Confirms the
Rumor of His Appointment to the Cab-
inet.
AUGUSTA,
Me.,
Feb 26.—Governor
Burleigh has received the following letter
from Hon. James G. Blaine:
WASHINGTON, Feb. 2, 1889.
His Excellency E. C. Burleigh, Governor
of Maine:
DEAR SIR—I hereby resign my posi-
tion as a member of the delegation to
represent Maine at the centennial of the
inauguration of George Washington as
President of the United States. I re-
quest that you will fill my place as
promptly as is consistent with the selec-
tion of a man who will be certain to dis-
charge the duties required of him and be
present in New York at the appointed
time.

JAMES G. BLAINE.
Governor Burleigh has appointed ex-
Governor Connor, who has been acting
chairman in the absence of Mr. Blaine,
as chairman of the Maine commission-
ers.
