LOSS OVER HALF MILLION.

Fire Occurs in Wholesale District at Omaha.

Omaha, Jan. 31. The fire which started in the wholesale district of this city late Saturday night was the most destructive in the history of Omaha. The total loss will exceed $500,000 at the most conservative estimate.

A half block was burned over, but the immense buildings contained great jobbing stocks, which is responsible for the enormous loss. The buildings, valued at $200,000, were owned respectively by the Mercer and Millard estates. No definite figures have yet been obtained on insurance, but the stocks of goods were generally covered by insurance up to the 90 per cent limit.

A more disastrous conflagration was only prevented by the heroic efforts of the entire fire department of Omaha, which was reinforced by several engines, hose wagons and other equipment from South Omaha and Council Bluffs.
