Mr. Darby, writing in the National Intelligencer, says: -

"There is one great political problem forcing itself forward for solution, and will not, for any great length of time, admit of remaining unsolved. The Anglo-Saxon nation of North America and the Sclavon-Russian of Europe and Asia, diverse as they are in principles of government, in language, or religion, have one tendency in common: that is, an almost instinctive motion towards the Pacific ocean. They are changing the face of two continents, and their improvements are, with sure and not slow advance, approaching each other. Steam and magnetism are both enlisted by the two, and serve each with equal fidelity. Great Britain, standing between the two other giants, and jealous of the increasing power of each, complicates the present and future. That future is approaching with mighty consequences."
