Washington—(LPA)—"Inner circle" control of Congress by the Republican "Old Guard" was condemned last week by a Republican Senator who warned that the GOP may suffer defeat in the 1948 elections if this domination continues.
Freshman Senator Raymond E. Baldwin declared in a magazine article that "if we act in the interest only of a minority of rock-ribbed Republicans we shall again quickly become a minority party. If we are to remain the majority party, we must act effectively in the interests of the people."
The Old Guard, said Baldwin, "gravely hindered" the Republican program in the last session. Far from being certain a GOP election triumph in 1948 may hinge on the independent voters of at least 20 "switch states" including New York, Pennsylvania, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Missouri, he said.
