If the possession of automobiles is any indication of the wealth and prosperity of a state, 1919 has been a banner year for Montana. Figures compiled in the office of Charles T. Stewart, secretary of state, show a total of 59,100 license plates issued to automobile owners during the year up to October 31, as compared with a total of 51,000 distributed in 1918.
Gross receipts from automobile licenses in the state have reached the sum of $406,256. A total of $2,621 was received during the month of October and 600 pairs of license plates issued, which is considered a remarkable showing for so late in the season, as the last and first quarters of the year are usually the lightest.
Despite the unusually early winter, however, new licenses continue to be issued in large numbers and the secretary of state is confident that his earlier prediction of a total of 60,000 licenses for the year will be realized.
