Full Text

Seriously Hurt.-On Monday evening last a severe and serious accident occurred to Mrs. Davis A. Kayser and Miss Mary Julia Baldwin. They were driving out in a buggy when the horse became frightened at a bear, which a man was leading along the street, and commenced to run. Mr. John Christian happened to be near at the time, and succeeded in grabbing the horse, but the animal was so terrified that he knocked Mr. Christian down, and running the buggy into a ditch by the side of the road, upset it and threw the occupants violently to the ground. Mrs. Kayser was severely hurt, her chin being cut through to the bone, separating the alveolar process with six teeth from the jaw bone, the head and arm badly bruised, and face cut. Miss Baldwin's head was run over by the buggy wheel and considerably bruised, but her injuries are not of a very severe character. Both ladies are now getting along very well considering the nature of their wounds. Dr. Gibson was called in and dressed the injuries to Mrs. Kayser.

If there is not an ordinance prohibiting bears being led through the streets, the City Council should pass one at its next meeting. They almost invariably frighten horses, and it is unsafe at all times to encounter them when driving.
