Thursday Morning Edition.
The following, says our Washington dispatch, is the language of Senator Seward:
"Heretofore, the cry, 'Save the Union' has been raised when there was no danger. I tell you, my friends, the question of slavery will not now be taken into account. We are to save the Union; then (and not till then) will all the rest worth saving."
If true, this is highly important, and from the manner in which we received it, we are inclined to the belief that the report is true.
Dropping, as beneath the notice of a true Statesman, all minor and secondary considerations—losing sight of all hobbies, and ignoring all party rallying cries—disclaiming the idea of natural or political division, and taking cognizance of "no North, no South, no East, no West," the real lover of his country seeks first to place the Union of these States upon a safe, a lasting foundation, and when that noble end shall have been thoroughly accomplished, other and lesser matters may be attended to. Such a course is patriotic and truly noble, and is what will save the Union intact. We hope to hear a corroboration of the above alleged declaration. Its effects for good would be immense.
