The examination of witnesses and the pleadings in this trial, which commenced on Tuesday the 23d ult. occupied the attention of the Court till the forenoon of the Saturday following, when Judge Parker, in a very learned, correct and impartial manner charged the jury, in doing which he was engaged one hour; after which the jury retired and agreed in fifteen minutes on a verdict of not guilty.
The jury was composed of respectable characters of both political parties and on being impanelled only one was challenged, and he was a federalist.
The report of this trial we understand is in the press and will shortly be published; and we intend giving such extracts from it as our limits will permit.
From what has been published in the Chronicle, and copied into democratic papers, it appears there were many who in order to glut that infernal malice with which they are generated by the rancor party spirit, would have massacred the subject of this trial, had an opportunity offered. As Mr. S. has been acquitted by a jury of his peers and those laws which are the pride and boast of Americans, we may pronounce that he was not guilty even of manslaughter; with what indignation then ought those to be viewed who have been constantly endeavouring to excite a spirit of jealousy towards our Courts of Justice and deprive an individual of a fair and impartial trial.
