Full Text

An Italian Brigand's Horse.

Among South Italian brigands even their horses are taught to resist the officers of the law. During the encounter at Rana Bucca in which the brigand Mirto was killed, the gendarmerie was amazed by the furious behavior of his horse, which lashed out on all sides, and succeeded in injuring one of the officers. On inquiry afterward among the prisoners taken it was ascertained that the horse had been trained to behave in this way by being repeatedly flogged until he kicked one of the brigands, dressed as a carabineer, approaching him. The horse at last became such an adept that he might be relied upon to kick and rear furiously at the mere sight of a uniform.
