TRIAL STARTED
IN DIST. COURT
Dave Thomas, charged with murder for the killing of Luke Brown here on May 11, last, today was placed on trial in the United States District Court before Judge Justin W. Harding. A jury was selected and impaneled this morning and the opening statements made.
One witness was examined by the Government at the morning session. It was expected the case would occupy several days.
Brown, an Indian prizefighter, died in local hospital on May 11, after he had been found unconscious in a hallway at the City Cafe, suffering from a knife wound in the stomach. Thomas was arrested a few hours later by City Patrolman Fred Campen.
After he had been detained for a day in the city jail, he is alleged to have confessed to Acting Chief of Police Phil O. Herriman. In a statement made a short time later to the United States District Attorney, Thomas admitted he had stabbed Brown but pleaded he had acted in self-defense. He was indicted last Fall by a grand jury at Ketchikan.
