Two Ships Collide
20 Miles Outside
Of San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (P) The American supertanker Titan and the Colombian motor vessel Rio Magdalena collided in heavy fog 20 miles south of San Francisco early Saturday.

Four hours after the accident, the Coast Guard reported both vessels were proceeding slowly under their own power toward San Francisco. Each escorted by a Coast Guard cutter.

A message from the Rio Magdalena to the Coast Guard said the ship was taking water in three places but was navigating. It added its engine would need minor repairs. The Coast Guard said this word indicated the ship was in no immediate danger.

The tanker reported it was taking on water but was in no danger of sinking.

The Titan, owned by the Overseas Oil Transport Co. of New York, was steaming toward its first visit to San Francisco. It sailed from Mobile, Ala., with a stop at a Texas port, and was due to berth at oil piers in Richmond across the Bay.

The Colombian refrigerator ship left San Francisco early Saturday bound for Los Angeles. Owner of the diesel-powered ship, built in 1945, is the Flota Mercante Grancolombiana S.A. with port of registry in Bogota.
