At a numerously attended meeting of the citizens of Le Claire and vicinity, held at Council Hall, on Tuesday, the 22d inst. Col. T. C. Eads was called to the Chair, and Mr. John A. Stonebreaker was appointed Secretary.
The Chairman stated the object of the meeting to be to take into consideration the propriety and practicability of constructing a Railroad from Davenport to Le Claire, around the Rock River Rapids of the Mississippi river.
After a free and candid interchange of opinions and views among those present, Mr. L. Summers, in conclusion of some remarks appropriate to the occasion, read a communication from Judge Grant, late President of the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad, urging, in strong terms, the propriety and practicability of such a road.
Whereupon, it was moved, that a committee of five be appointed by the Chair, to draft resolutions expressive of the views of this community on the subject of the above railroad.
The Chair appointed Messrs. L. Summers, D. Barnes, W. Parkhurst, R. U. Rogers and L. Primm, as said committee.
The above committee, after a short absence, reported the following preamble and resolutions, which on motion were adopted:
Whereas, The commerce of the country is greatly obstructed, and the delays and dangers attendant thereon, greatly enhanced by the Des Moines and Rock River Rapids; and whereas, the high rates of freight thereto attributable are becoming more and more burthensome to the agricultural and producing community as the population increases; and whereas, in the opinion of this meeting, a railroad around said rapids is the cheapest and most practicable means of overcoming these disadvantages, and facilitating the commerce and intercourse between the north and the south, therefore
Resolved, That we cordially approve of measures being taken immediately for the commencement and early completion of a Railroad from the city of Davenport at the foot of the Rock River Rapids, to the town of Le Claire at the head of said Rapids.
Resolved, That we earnestly invite and expect the cordial co-operation of the community in general in this enterprise, and especially do we rely upon the well known energy and liberality of the cities of Davenport, St. Louis, Galena and Dubuque, to aid in completing a work of such vast commercial and pecuniary importance to their interests.
Resolved, That a committee of three be appointed by this meeting to act in conjunction with a similar committee of the citizens of Davenport, to prepare articles of incorporation, under the general incorporation laws of this State, for the "Davenport and Le Claire Railroad Company."
In accordance with the above resolution, the meeting appointed Dr. James Gamble, R. H. Rogers and Laurel Summers as said committee.
On motion it was,
Resolved, That the proceedings of this meeting be signed by the officers, and copies thereof sent to the editors of the Davenport, St. Louis, Galena and Dubuque newspapers, with the request that they publish the same.
On motion the meeting adjourned.
THOS. C. EADS, Chairman.
JOHN A. STONEBREAKER, Sec'y.
