Full Text

The Bill Creating a Solicitor of Customs for the city of New York has been laid on the shelf. The House of Representatives, by a decided vote, during the past week, having postponed the further consideration of this pet measure of Messrs. Collector Barney and Surveyor Andrews till December next, will, we trust, give Congress time to get some important information relative to the operations of the officers now in charge of the Customs at this port. Hon. Frederick A. Conkling deserves the thanks of the merchants of New York for the defeat of the scheme to foist on them a new batch of ravenous officials. The present Collector and Surveyor are abundantly able to do all the blood-letting the merchants can endure. It is therefore to be hoped that if ever these office-holders have the impudence to bring this proposition up again, that it will be promptly voted down by Congress.
