Full Text

In the night of Wednesday the 23d inst. we had a most violent storm of wind and rain, which increased during the night to such a degree, as to blow down many very large trees, unroofed several houses, destroyed a considerable quantity of Indian corn, fruit, and did other material damage.

The destruction among the vessels in Elizabeth river and Hampton road surpasses any thing of the kind ever known to have happened in this country. Many were driven a considerable distance on land some are totally lost, and hardly one but what has received such damage as to be rendered incapable of proceeding to sea. We have received an account of the following vessels: Ship Favorite, John Hughes, entirely lost: Ship Mermaid, Hunter, on shore, but her cargo has since been taken out, and we are informed she has been got off, with the loss of her masts, &c. Brig Commerce, Wilson; brig Hero, Denny; and Two Pollies, Brown, on shore—brig Tortola Packet, Alcorn, and a schooner, rode out the storm, but we are informed the latter cut away her masts. The above vessels were in Hampton road. Brig Neptune, Wallace, on shore at Almond, Point; lost her bow-sprit, and sprung her foremast. A new brig drove into the Main street of Portsmouth: schooner Sincerity, White, on shore near the distillery; the schooner Patriot, on shore near. Portsmouth. Several other vessels that were driven on shore, have been got off.
