Full Text

In the recent Presidential election in Mississippi, the Americans cast two fifths of all the votes polled, but succeeded in electing only one out of the five members of Congress, Mr. Lake, of the Fourth District. The Mississippi Legislature is Democratic, and one of its first acts upon assembling this winter, says the Louisville Journal, was to "gerrymander" the State, so as if possible to overpower the American vote in the Fourth District. They have taken a strong Democratic county from another district, and added it to Lake's to make it Democratic. They thus seek to stifle the voice of two fifths of all the voters of the State, because these two fifths are native-born Americans and dare to vote for the establishment of American principles. These are the same gentry who bawled their throats sore a short time ago over the proscriptiveness of Know-Nothingism.
