"To Improve Instruction" is one basic purpose of a professional teachers' organization. To promote this determination, Elmer Stuhlmiller, president of The Harlem local professional teachers' organization, called on Supt. Larry Watterson and Principal Dallas Owens at an association meeting Oct. 9 at 4:30 in the Home Ec. room to present to the teachers the goals and objectives of education.
Every teacher upon graduation is well informed on goals and objectives in education, but Mr. Watterson stated that goals and objectives change with the times and that it is necessary to re-evaluate the goals and objectives in education in view of the times and at the same time keeping in mind the community in which we live and teach.
Basically, the goals and objectives of education evolve from the seven cardinal principles of education. The principles are health, command of the fundamental processes, worthy home membership, vocational preparation, civic responsibility, wise use of leisure time, and ethical character development.
Mr. Owens' comments centered on the part individual teachers contribute to meet acceptable goals and objectives in education by their own attitudes, concept, and display in matters of control, discipline, responsibility, knowledge, courtesy, good manners, and morality.
"The greater the knowledge, the greater the contribution."
In this one area, Mr. Owens stated.
One cardinal principle in education is the teaching of civic duties and responsibilities, and Mr. Owens commented that this then becomes incumbent upon every teacher to promote the propagation of our form of government.
Every professional organization has ethical standards. A new proposed code of ethics is under consideration for adoption by our National Education Association and the Montana Education Association.
Mrs. Brekke, Mrs. Florence Hunter, Mrs. LaVerne Berglund, and Bill Icenoggle at this same meeting presented comments on the four basic principles of the new proposed code.
The following teachers of the Harlem school system were present: Miss Josephine McDermott, Miss Rave Durocher, Mrs. Louise Hutton, Mrs. Mildred Schneider, Mrs. B. Aurelia Chacey, Mrs. Mabel Egeland, Mrs. Cecile Streber, Mrs. Mary Owens, Mrs. Anne Knutson, Mrs. Clara Larson, Leonard Wood, Joseph Nemes, Mrs. Constance Wagner, James Thompson, Dallas F. Owens, Larry Watterson, Mrs. LaVerne Berglund, Mrs. Esther Brekke, Mrs. Florence Hunter, Elmer Stuhlmiller, William Icenoggle, and Harold Farris.
Mrs. Olaf Brekke served the coffee and doughnuts from 4 to 4:30 that were provided by the unit president.
Mr. Owens is the vice president of the professional association and Mrs. Connie Wagner is secretary-treasurer. These officers with the president and Harold Farris also make up the executive committee.
