To the Editor of the Union:
Boston and its surrounding villages is perhaps the most delightful place for a summer residence in the country. The heat is never very oppressive, and the nights are always cool and pleasant, caused by the sea breeze which sets in always after sunset. The bathing is also fine. the city being surrounded with salt water, and good bathing establishments are open to visiters, for small remuneration, at all hours. Southerners who visit Niagara, Newport, and other watering-places would find this whereabouts equally as pleasant and much more economical and convenient.
The grand democratic demonstration in honor of Gen. Butler held in Washington on Friday, 4th instant, is mentioned in the papers in a most flattering manner. It must have been a brillant and interesting affair, well gotten up, and worthy of the gallant chieftain whom it was intended to honor.
The election returns thus far received have taken the believers in Old Zach's availability "all aback." They regard them as the "death-knell" of whigery. If the certain whig States show such a decided loss, what hope can be entertained of the uncertain States? None. Cass and Butler will be triumphantly elected, (mark the prediction!) and perhaps the vote of Massachusetts will aid in doing so. The whig party are shivered to pieces in the "Old Bay State;" and the "free-soil" movement affecting the whig party more than the democratic, great hopes are entertained by intelligent democrats here, with whom I have conversed, that the State will go for Cass. So certain of it are some, as to make bets even up. Connecticut is in the same "fix;" and if your executive committee of the Jackson Democratic Association make a proper effort to enlighten the minds of the people of Connecticut, by scattering documents in, that State, you may add that State to the democratic column. Maine and New Hampshire are certain; New Jersey also. Ohio is totally given up; in fact, as was the case in 1840 with the whigs, so again will be the case this year, only reversed; it will be a perfect Cass and Butler insurrection!
As to the movement of the "free soil" men, it cannot do any injury to the democratic cause, further than by taking away the vote of New York. Rest assured, the democrats of the north love their principles too well, and are attached too strongly to the Union, to be induced by revengeful, disappointed, and designing politicians, to suffer themselves to be misled. Every day gives more and more convincing proof of this fact. Indeed, I believe, as a party, the democrats are more thoroughly organized, and are stronger now than they have ever heretofore shown themselves. All they ask is, for the South to do their duty; they pledge themselves to do theirs.
The Revere House (Paran Stevens, proprietor) is the best house in Boston, and perhaps in the Union. It is the most beautiful, orderly, and cleanly establishment I have ever entered. The rooms well furnished; the table d'hote everything that could be desired. I recommend all travellers to visit this house. They will find this no "puff."
