Full Text

For the Freeman's Chronicle.

It must be evident to every person who will take the trouble to inspect the public jail in this town, that it is not competent to the purpose of securing criminals. It must also strike every reflecting mind very sensibly, that where a public prison can be so easily forced, the wicked and vicious part of society will have greater temptation to violate the laws. Let the blame rest upon whom it may, the evil ought to be speedily remedied. I am informed that the builder received $3,400 dollars. I do not believe that any jail in the state cost more—and I am pretty confident none is weaker than ours.
