Proposed Platform for
Democratic Convention
CHICAGO, (A.P.)—Rep. John W. McCormack today picked five southerners and an Illinois Negro lawmaker to serve on a 15-member subcommittee to draft the proposed platform for the Democratic National Convention.
The group will submit first to McCormack's 107-member platform committee and then to the convention itself a series of proposed planks—including one on the explosive civil rights issue.
McCormack designated himself as ex-officio chairman of the drafting group—obviously in an effort to compromise the bitter dispute between Dixie and northern delegates over whether the platform should specifically endorse the Supreme Court's public school desegregation decision.
From the South, McCormack picked Gov. James P. Coleman of Mississippi, former Gov. John S. Battle of Virginia, Sen. Sam Ervin of North Carolina, Rep. Hayes of Arkansas and Vann M. Kennedy of Texas.
