Full Text

Education in Mississippi.

We learn from the Raymond Gazette that at a Teachers' Convention, recently held in that place, there were present, besides the teachers, to hear the address, two white men and two negroes!! Had it been a monkey show, a rifle shooting, a quarter race or a cock fight, we would bet a year's pay to a win head, that there would have been ten, aye 30 times that number present, of both colors. Does not this fact show that the cause of education has taken a deep hold on the good people of Hinds, as well as on people throughout the State? Must not that most useful and hardest worked and poorest paid class, school teachers, derive much encouragement from this fact? Do the people expect teachers and editors of newspapers to instruct the whole people without any encouragement from themselves.
