THE HAYES INCIDENT
The report that Roland Hayes, one of the world's great singing artists, has been a victim of race prejudice in its cruder forms will sharply shock thousands of Americans who know him not only as a musician of great gifts, but also as a man exceptionally gentle, sincere, and sensitive.
Profoundly disturbed by the plight of his people, he has for years worked incessantly toward its improvement, but always in quiet, unadvertised ways: it is not in him to be a rabble-rouser nor a headline-hunter, and those who know him will not readily be convinced that he was at fault in the Georgia incident, which produced his allegation that he was beaten for resenting rudeness to his wife.
Until arrival of complete data on the affair it will be difficult to judge. But the fact that Roland Hayes has been known and admired in Europe as extensively as in the United States makes it particularly unfortunate that his name should high-light a situation that enemy propagandists have been only too ready to exploit. — St. Paul Despatch.
