THE COAL MINE CATASTROPHE.

One of the most appalling catastrophes that has ever occurred, is reported by telegraph to have occurred in a Pennsylvania coal mine near Scranton, on last Monday. A fire broke out in a flue at the bottom of the shaft, which was 327 feet below the surface. The flame rushed up the shaft and communicated to the buildings at the mouth and these falling into the shaft filled it with burning timber and debris, and cut off all communication and prevented the introduction of air to those below.

It is estimated that over two hundred men have perished. It is one of the most shocking and terrible tragedies of which there is any account.
