The endowment by Parliament of the college of Maynooth in Ireland, by a grant of twenty-five thousand pounds, appears to be a matter of some considerable excitement across the water. The institution is purely Catholic in its nature, being conducted alone for the education of priests of that faith; this doubtless occasions the excitement. From a speech made by Sir Robert Peel, favoring the grant, the design appears to be to allay, if possible, the agitation in Ireland, so that Ireland may be brought to unite with England against America, on the Oregon question; and if O'Connell may be considered as speaking the sentiments of the agitators, Peel has not reckoned without his host, for the cry of O'Connell is now for Peel and repeal, and defiance to America.
