Full Text

If there ever existed a community of people where a high toned, we might say chivalric submission to the behests of Law, were more than usually imperative, that community is to be found in the people of the United States.—

It is often said, and we do not know but it is well said, that in addition to the common obedience due by the individuals of every state to the institutions thereof, the American people are bound by the unusual considerations that the laws they are called upon to obey were made by their own consent, by their representatives—by themselves. But throwing aside this appeal to their self respect, every body must perceive that it is of the very first importance to the maintenance of a freedom that can last, of a true and salutary freedom, without which, it is the boast of Americans, that they have no wish to live, that a deep, real, and unfailing regard for established law should be enshrined within the popular breast, aye, to such an extent as to become a distinctive feature in the National character.—Georgetown Adv.
