FOREST FIRES.
Burning of a Lumber Yard and Quantities of Timber in the Mountains Near Helena.
The dense smoke noticed in the mountains south of Helena on Saturday was caused by fires in the timber that originated at Gebauer & Yergy's saw mill at Sheep mountain. Last Thursday night a slab pile took fire there and burned for a few hours before it was extinguished. It was thought the last spark had been killed, but during the night some embers that had escaped notice were fanned into a flame by the wind and set fire to the lumber pile. These burned all night and soon communicated the blaze to the adjacent forest. The mill escaped, but over 300,000 feet of lumber were destroyed. Once afire the dense forest burned fiercely, and all day Friday and Saturday the destroying element held high carnival and reveled in its work of laying low the noble forest. Just how much timber has been destroyed is not known yet, but the amount is considerable and is a great loss.
