Event Details
The severest earthquake ever known on the Pacific coast occurred early on the morning of the 21st of October. The shock at San Francisco was severe, with sidewalks covered in piles of brick and plaster, buildings cracked from cellar to roof, plate glass windows shattered, and some houses under construction leveled. Shocks continued for a week, but none as violent as the first. Many buildings were injured, mostly defective ones or on made ground; strongly built houses were not materially injured. Printing offices suffered severely, with types and forms scattered, causing trouble in producing newspapers due to fears of entering buildings. Unlike the perpendicular 1868 shocks that broke glass but few walls, these horizontal shocks broke little glass but shook off cornices and plasterings. Earthquakes may occur anytime near San Francisco, in a volcanic range.
