Internal Improvements by the General Government.
It is asserted, in the late Loco Foco Address to the people of Virginia, that they are in favor of Mr. Van Buren, because that gentleman is the head of a party which denies to the General Government the right to appropriate money to works of Internal Improvement. We shall prove, by figures, which "cannot lie," unless the official records from which they are taken be false, that this assertion of the author of the Loco Foco Address is as untrue as some dozen others which he has made with equal boldness. This statement exhibits the following results, to wit:
So that in the first term of four years of Gen. Jackson's Anti-Internal Improvement Administration, the expenditures of the General Government for works of this character were three times as large as they were during J. Q. Adams's term, and that in the second period of four years they had more than quadrupled. We have not now the means before us of ascertaining exactly how much Mr. Van Buren has expended for the same object since he has been in office, but we are told by the Address recently issued by the Loco Foco Convention, that the estimates for this branch of the public service for the present year amount to $1,713,000—more than three times as much as in the whole four years of Mr. Adams's Administration! If these facts show that the party in power are opposed to Internal Improvements, we hope that they will not show their opposition to the Bank, the Tariff and Abolition in the same way—that's all.
