Full Text

A Shame.

We are told that some of our merchants are shaving the county orders recently issued by the County Commissioners to the families of soldiers, and in some cases they compel the wives of soldiers to purchase articles they do not need by refusing to make "change" where a person buys less than the amount of the order. This is a burning shame and an outrage, and the actors should be held up to the public scorn of the community. Everybody knows that Vanderburgh county orders are almost, if not altogether, as good as greenbacks, and, at the profit at which merchants sell goods, all can do well by taking the orders at par. The man who would speculate off the necessities of a soldier's wife is unworthy of a place in the loyal States.
