Letter from Cocke County.
Editor Herald:—I beg leave of your columns to state the offers of Cocke county. This is one of the most mountainous parts of upper East Tenn.; it is astonishing to look at the hills and mountains with which we are surrounded, although its valuable ore is vastly rich—such as iron and lead ores and gold. Capt. J. S. Lee, Supt. of the South Pittsburg Company, has a piece of gold he found big as a pea. There has been some of the best miners prospecting for S. S. C. L. I. Co.—three Englishmen and one American, and cut a vein of solid hematite iron ore 63 feet across, and in three miles of the iron ore on Mr. Huff's land there can be very large pieces of gold found by using a pan. This is a great country for water powers—the French Broad river running through these mountains with its falls and shoals.
The farmers here are fixing to plant their crops. Wheat looks fine. Circuit Court is closed for the present term. Joshua Franks, who had been in the Newport jail for over a year for rape, came clear and went up on the Buncombe train last night for home. I suppose there will be a happy meeting with him and his wife who has been sick for some weeks. There is a man here sixty years old that a negro woman swore rape against.
