Maj. Gen. Hooker, Major General George
B. Meade, was born in Spain in 1815, during
the temporary sojourn of his parents
in that country. His father was a Pennsylvanian.
He entered West Point as a cadet
from the District of Columbia, in 1831, and
graduated July 1, 1835; entered the army
as Second Lieutenant of 3d Artillery, but
resigned Oct '35; again entered the army
May 27, '43, has remained in service ever
since. He has held important commands,
and distinguished himself in connection
with the army of the Peninsula in nearly
every important battle in which it has been
engaged. His reputation in the army is
that of a clear-headed and energetic officer,
who has no political or personal ends to
serve, but is loyal to the core. God grant
that he may be the right man in the right
place! this being the seventh change.
