"Mr. Mackey, the whig nominee for Congress for the First District of Orleans has retired. The field is now occupied by Mr. Gayarré and Judge Dunbar. (Mr. Gayarré independent, and Dunbar, regular democrat.) The True Delta, says in complimentary language to Mr. Gayarré that the day preceding that on which the nomination was made, the Slidell junta, we understand tendered the nomination to Mr. Gayarré, on the condition that he would retire, in a suitable manner, his spirited address to the people, which had then been some days before the public. This, we are informed, Mr. Gayarré indignantly declined doing, as indeed might have been expected by all honorable men, his address being calculated to win golden opinions for its author, and to conciliate, as we know it has, the commendation of the highest political functionaries in the Union. Our readers will see from all this how very little the people have to do with the nomination of even their highest servants, and whatever opinion they may entertain of Mr. Gayarré's political merits, will certainly feel grateful to him for setting defiance, the miserable faction, that have so long ruled with insolent and arbitrary presumption, the people of the First Congressional District."

We regard this contest with a great deal of interest. It is a contest between a self constituted and presumptuous autocracy, and the people; and turns upon the point, "shall the people be bull-wrung and governed by others, or shall they govern themselves. The seventh of November will decide the matter-at least so far as the citizens of the First Congressional District are concerned.
