LOCAL MAN HAS
NARROW ESCAPE
ON LEUPP ROAD

By using quick head work, Jack Lowen, an operator in the Santa Fe telegraph office in Winslow, saved himself from certain death and loss of his car in the swelled waters of the little Colorado river about 20 miles north of Winslow a week ago, following the heavy rains.

According to Lowen he was driving to Leupp on the river route at about 35 miles per hour and when negotiating the short curves he was amazed to see nothing but a body of rushing, muddy water ahead of him with a sheer drop off of 20 feet confronting him instead of the smooth roadway.

His former race driving instinct impelled him to avert running headlong off the bank into the river, he reported in telling of his experience, and throwing out his clutch and "gunning" his motor to top speed he cramped the front wheels making the race drivers' turn-about and had headed his car back to the direction of Winslow. Both front tires were torn from the wheels. Looking back Lowen said he saw a large portion of the bank cave into the river. Had it not been for making instinctive use of his racing experience Lowen says he would not be here to tell the tale.
