ESCAPED WHILE AT WORK UNDER GUARD
Was Sentenced To Pen For Assault On Constable Bunting Several Years Ago
Fred Collins, colored, of Mappsville, Va., a fugitive from the State Penitentiary, was apprehended at the Union Station, Salisbury, Md., by Constable G. E. Bunting, of this county as he was alighting from the southbound train reaching that city about 10:20 a. m. last Saturday morning, January 26th.
Constable Bunting was on his way home from Baltimore, where he had been sent to look up a man wanted in this county, who left that city the morning before Constable Bunting reached there. He came back by Claiborne and stopped in Salisbury, Md., to spend Friday night with his son.
The next morning he was waiting to catch the train for home. As the train pulled into the depot he noticed Fred Collins.
Knowing that Collins was a fugitive from the Virginia Penitentiary, he immediately stepped back into the crowd and gave him a chance to walk off. He kept his eye on him and after he entered the station followed him into one of the rooms, where he was put under arrest. A railroad detective was called and he was turned over to the Maryland authorities until the Virginia Penitentiary officials could be communicated with.
Collins was sentenced to 18 months in the Penitentiary for an assault on Constable Bunting several years ago. After serving about 5 months he escaped last Thanksgiving while working on a road gang.
