TOLEDO, Ohio (SNS)— Three men were arrested at Pinewood and Fifteenth Street after Patrolmen John McCarthy and John Michalak were attacked while trying to disperse a mob of more than fifty rioters.
The patrolmen had been instructed at roll call to keep the corner cleared as complaints had been made by residents in the vicinity of the congestion. They stopped several times during their cruise on duty to order persons to move on.
The patrolmen reported they stopped later and observed more than 50 persons on the corner where a dice game was in progress. Patrolman McCarthy, leaving Patrolman Michalak listening to the radio, went to the corner to disperse the mob.
The loiterers attacked the patrolmen after Patrolman Michalak went to the aid of his partner, and they were forced to drive to a nearby police box, where they called the Safety Building for help.
