IS DEAD IN NEW YORK
Lower House of Legislature Defeats Endorsing Resolution
by Single Vote
ALBANY, N. Y. May 4.—Unless the
State Senate shall pass a resolution
endorsing the amendment to the Federal
constitution legalizing an income
tax, there can be no favorable action
in this State. When the resolution
failed yesterday in the lower House by
one vote, on a motion to reconsider the
vote by which it was originally lost in
the assembly, it finally killed the
measure so far as that body is concerned.
To get action now the Senate
must pass the resolution and transmit
it to the assembly here, as Senate legislation.
It would be considered new
legislation. An attempt will be made
to do this before the legislature finally
adjourns, but it is generally believed
that the income tax is dead for this
session at least
