Full Text
Tom Paine has announced, another edition of the Age of Reason. This book has already done more mischief to morality, than half the deistical publications of the last century. It attempts to undo the tie between the parent and the child, and to destroy friendship between man and man, by the subversion of the Christian Religion. This imp of mischief, who was last imported among us by Mr. Jefferson, has, as we learn from New Jersey, employed the time, since the publication of his contemptible letters to the citizens of the United States, in haranguing democratic meetings, and propagating Deism. With an effrontery unparalleled, this calumniator of Washington tells us he has again dipped his pen in the gall of discord. It is, however, devoutly to be hoped that some stop will be put to such wickedness.
The Age of Reason has been burnt by the common hangman in England, and France has utterly renounced the doctrine therein recommended. No part of the Christian world, save the United States would permit this scoffer of Jesus to multiply his sins. Our religion, for which so many of the ablest men in Europe have laid down their lives—a religion which Locke, Bacon, Sir Isaac Newton, Dr. Johnson, and many other eminent authors, who have been laymen, has stamped with approbation, is now mocked and degraded by a wicked sot, a fellow risen from the dregs of mankind who, backed by the disappointed and the envious, is endeavouring to destroy that which alone solaces the unfortunate and proves an antidote to sin—the Christian Religion.
