Full Text

The Intelligencer now attempts to excuse its endorsement of the "Rev." Albert's canard about Jackson and the free schools, shouldering the whole job on its Republican contemporary, the Commercial. That won't fit. In the first place it ought not to be so foolish as to copy such stuff from a Republican paper, without first investigating it. In the second place, the animus of the Commercial in publishing it was too apparent to deceive even a child. And in the third place the Intelligencer was not deceived, and was not concerned about its truth or falsity, but gave it a wholesale endorsement because it served its purpose in conducting a campaign of slander against the Democratic candidate for Governor.
